And then there's the flip side to winrunner. MI is putting it to bed and extending QuickTest to do everything WinRunner did and more. But like they said on the other postings; the test tool you need depends on the type of testing you need to do. Could you be more specific? ------------------

WinRunner is supposed to be put in a maintenance mode within the next year. That means the new releases will only consist of bug fixes and no new functionality (unless it is requested by one of their larger customers). They are going to start the push to make everyone use QT, if possible. QuickTest 6 is supposed to be released within the next month or two. You will see that the functionality has been extended and QT is no longer for only Web-enabled apps. Mike

c, c++, java, perl, tcl, vb, windows scripting language, shell scripts and batch scripts are often used for automated testing as well.------------------

As others have suggested, which tool will work best depends on your application, abilities of test "automaters", and a host of other items. We have been successful with QARun and are pleased with what Certify has to offer.------------------ Pete psid001@aol.com

I've never used it, but you might try TestComplete by AutomatedQA. Search for discussions on it on this forum.------------------

MgiacJust been onto Mercury about WinRunner and QT and as far as they are concerned QT is not going to take over the role of WinRunner. There is a new release of WinRunner due out soon and new functionality will be added but no plans to stop doing that. Yes QT will be available and as with any package QT will have new and improved functionality but it's not intended to take over WinRunner. Just had to check it out before everyone started to panic here ------------------

If you know a basic of C\C++ and you're looking for a robust automated testing tool that can manipulate and validate data on GUI then Silk Test is a perfect choice. If you are not familiar with any of programming languages and you want to just capture your action on screen then play back exactly what you do, then WinRunner or Robot will be the best choice. Another tool that I recommend you to use is Rational Visual Test version 6. It is less expensive and quite robust. It can capture and playback and it uses Visual Basic language. ------------------

The Mercury site isn't going to have that kind of information yet. I've been talking to a lot of internal contacts I have within Mercury. The company I'm working for has a bunch of projects done in a variety of languages (java, c++, etc). I was told by my rep inside Merc that this was indeed happening, and it was re-confirmed when I talked a guy from Mercury R&D in Israel. ------------------

lawcab,You need to be a bit more specific about what you plan to test, before we can offer any solid advice on tools suitable for your needs. Come on, being in QA/Test you know its details that count. Meantime, go to QAForums White Papers section, where there are a number of good articles comparing test tools: http://www.qadownloads.com/White_Papers/ Take It Easy ------------------
