I have used both for quite a few years, and I am working in a place that is considering buying a tool very soon.

I was just wondering what others thought. If you have used both, let me know

I tend to be a big Mercury fan, based solely on their market share, stability, and customer service ... those reasons alone win me over

It depends on your test environment and your goals and the skill set of your testers. If your application is Visual Fox Pro, neither will work

Actually, based on my recommendation, we use both....

- Mercury's Winrunner for our VC++ applications (using Stingray grids) and Web applications - Mercury has an add-on for Stingray grids.
- Rational Robot for our VB and Web applications - can't beat Robot when it comes to VB apps (in our environment).

...and we have developed an in-house test harness in VBScript, VC++ - unrelated to any commercial tool.

Both tools (Mercury's and Rational's) can be very useful. As always, it depends on your system engineering environment which tool (if any) will work best.

Okay, Elfriede, so most of us have trouble getting our companies to invest the cash for a single solution - how does one get them to invest in 2?? Or is the key publishing several books and being considered one of the leading minds for your field?

To test java applications, Mercury tools are the better choice.
To test Microsoft applications, Rational tools are better.

For web Testing, Mercury has support to test in bot IE & Netscape.

I would rephrase:
For a team with a programming background - Mercury tool is better.
If team members have no clue about programming - Rational tool is better.

Mercury...Rational...
IBM...Apple...
Windows...Linux...
Your peanut butter in my chocolate...Your chocolate in my peanut butter...

These are the questions that have been plauging Man since the dawn of time.

I don't think you can classify one tool being better based on what kind of app it is, or a high-level classification of the kind of group you have.

What you need to do, is get the tools into your environment and play with them. Will WR recognize all your objects, custom ones too? Will Robot? Do the tools do what *you* need them to do? Does the company's level of support ('cause, of course, you've CALLED their tech support to test them, right?) seem acceptable to you? Does the company's stability? Does it's release schedule.

Only you can tell, only you can know.

I have used rational set of tools and find them to be great to implement for large applications.

hai,
It purely depends on your requirement, but if u ask me i wud opt for Compuware's QArun the best testing tool which i had used. I had also used robot and WR ,but each of these tools give extra-ordinary support to apps built on a particular architecture, whereas QARun is a tool which can be used for testing all kinds of apps irrespective of their architecture.

Currently we are using Rational's tool set for our test planning and requirement coverage. Our applications are all web based and Rational's Robot tool ISN'T working. In the past I have used QARun and have had big success! The price difference is a plus and the compatibility between Windows OS platforms and programming language. As all of these threads say, do a Proof of Concept with as many companies as you can to see which works better in your environment.

For web testing Mercury rocks. For more details see the download section, whitepapers and the test tools comparison there.
