I think when you first start automating you have to account for the learning curve time wise, but once you get used to whatever scripting language you are using, it is fast as usual, I dont think the pay off is limited. I think it is a tremendous payoff. The act of writing a worthwhile script in itself promotes a rigorous manual test when setting up automated procedures. I think the drawback could be that you can become so reliant on automated tests that you forget to do the manual stuff too. Ive fallen into that trap myself once or twice. But if you have a nice equalibrium of automated and manual stuff and you chose your automations wisely, you will save time and increase productivity. Peace, Spaz ------------------

Basically it depends on the length of the Project. If the length of the Project is really very short then you cannot dedicate the QA team to come up with automated scripts. If the length of the project is long enough then you can come up with automated scripts and save your time in the long run.------------------ Begining and Ending is a part of life

http://www.newport-group-inc.com/PDF/!mercury.pdf Check out that report. It mentions Mercury's tools, but it's a general report. Also look at Elfriede's book: Automated Software Testing. Specifically, Chapter 2. Lots of good info there.
