I have been asked to recommend a load testing tool for a project which uses a VB 6 client connecting to a MSSQL 7 database over ADO. Simulating 200 users running multiple scripts in parallel is the main requirement.Having worked with LoadRunner before I would have recommended this but the cost is deemed too high. I would be grateful if anyone could point me in the direction of some cheaper tools which would meet the requirements above. Cheers.... ------------------

I will always recommend the Rational Toolset. However, if you are REALLY tight on budget, the Microsoft Web Comparison Analysis Tool or the Microsoft Web Application Stress Tool is free for up to 250 Virtual Users. It might be worth a try. I don't know if it will work with a client server app, as they were both designed for web. http://webtool.rte.microsoft.com ------------------ Scott Barber NOBLE(STAR Sr. Performance Engineer sbarber@noblestar.com http://www.noblestar.com

The popular choices are like these 1-70. Loadrunner 71-99. Rational Suit of tools. 100. etcIn spite of the heavy cost, LR takes up almost 2/3 rd of the market followed by rational capturing the remaining market by leaps and bounds. There's no penetration shown by the others. I think, one should decide the perf testing budget aspect during the project cost estimation itself. As there is no escape from these expenssive tools, as far as perf testing is concerned. ------------------ Euc Cognizant Technology Solutions. pankajbhatte@yahoo.com while traveling parallel to a tangent , it's difficult to be normal, isn't it?

Another thing to think about is outsourcing Performance testing. If peformance testing is not something you will be doing continually in your organization, it is significantly cheaper to hire an outside organization for, say, a month, than to purchase a license and the hardware to support it.------------------ Scott Barber NOBLE(STAR Sr. Performance Engineer sbarber@noblestar.com http://www.noblestar.com

Silk Performaer might serve the purpose too. These days they seem quite willing to negotiate on the license costs.------------------ -Suresh Nageswaran punekar@yahoo.com Cognizant Technology Solutions, Pune, India.

Thanks all for your feedback on this issue. LR, Rational, SilkPermormer, and QALoad from Compuware are all being looked at at the moment. However does anyone know anything about BenchMarkFactory from Quest software? Anyone used it in the past?

Yes - I found it fairly easy to use, but less informative than I was interested in. It is terrific for comparing multiple configurations of your application (best for webservers) but doesn't do a great job of telling you what the performance actually IS with your OWN application. It provides industry standard benchmarks as derived from industry standart data, web pages, etc. It really doesn't use YOUR data, web pages, etc. to determine what YOUR performance will be. ------------------ Scott Barber NOBLE(STAR Sr. Performance Engineer sbarber@noblestar.com http://www.noblestar.com

I just had an in-house demo of SilkPerformer from the folks at Segue, and I have to say that I was favorably impressed. I have used LoadRunner and WebLoad (from Radview) for the past two years and I saw a lot of the features that I liked from both of those tools combined in the Segue tool. I'm not in the loop in terms of purchasing the tools, so I'm not sure what the price of SilkPerformer is, but I'm sure that it is cheaper than LoadRunner.HTH -Adam ------------------

You should try our newly released LoadDriver 1.1. For a limited time, you can download the full feature application from http://www.inforsolution.com and get a free 100 days license of 10, 000 virtual users.LoadDriver is very robust and user-friendly. It directly launches browsers to do the test. It supports the testing of browser-side scripts and objects. But it requires that the SUT (System Under Test) have a web interface.
